Hannah Pingree, the former speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, has clinched the Democratic nomination in Maine’s 2026 gubernatorial race. Pingree defeated a crowded field of primary challengers in the blue-leaning state’s Democratic primary.

Pingree’s victory is seen as a blow to Graham Platner, a U.S. Senate candidate who was backed by one of Pingree’s primary opponents, Troy Jackson. Jackson, a logger and former Maine State Senate President, had been viewed as a top contender for the party’s nomination.
Pingree, who is the daughter of Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine, and is associated with the party’s establishment wing, thanked her competitors in a statement and praised the civility of the ranked-choice campaign. She will now face the winner of the Republican primary, former Bush administration official Bobby Charles, in the general election.
The gubernatorial hopefuls are running to succeed Gov. Janet Mills, D-Maine, who was term-limited. Mills had endorsed Pingree to be her successor.
