Greenville, SC – M.Judson Booksellers is bringing a literary weekend to the heart of Paris Mountain State Park. Beginning Oct. 16, the independent bookseller will host its Reader Retreat at the historic Camp Buckhorn, with the program running through Oct. 18.
What to expect
Attendees will stay in renovated cabins that date back to 1937, with deluxe two‑person cabins priced at $1,150 and four‑person cabins at $1,900. Each guest receives a welcome cocktail, the featured author’s book, a specially selected title, all meals, snacks, wine and beer, and access to the camp’s private lake, canoes, paddles and life‑jackets.
“It’s like a miniature summer camp all to itself with a lodge, cabins, private lake and hiking trail,” said Beth Ables, the retreat’s featured author and M.Judson’s marketing manager. “I can’t wait to be cozy around a fire, reading and sipping something delicious.”
Program highlights
The weekend will culminate in an author brunch on Oct. 18, where Ables will discuss her collection of essays and cookbooks. She described the culinary side of the retreat: “We plan for warm cinnamon rolls for breakfast, gourmet s’mores around the campfire, cozy places to stretch out on a quilt and read, delicious lunch to take on a hike or eat while sitting on the porch, and cozy warming dinners filled with good conversation while a fire crackles in the big stone hearth.”
Participants are encouraged to bring towels, linens for their bunks, flashlights for trips to the bathhouse, and comfortable clothing for the cooler fall weather.
Why this matters to Greenville readers
The retreat adds a cultural offering to Greenville’s growing arts‑and‑literature scene. M.Judson has previously hosted similar events in Pawley’s Island and Beaufort, South Carolina, and Highlands, North Carolina, but this is the first time the retreat will be held in the Upstate.
Local readers looking for a quiet, family‑friendly getaway can combine a love of books with outdoor recreation, supporting both the regional literary community and the state park’s preservation efforts.
