Lynx outlast Sun 86-80 as McBride’s 23 points power Minnesota past Connecticut

The Minnesota Lynx left Mohegan Sun Arena with a hard-fought 86-80 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Wednesday, July 8, using a balanced offensive attack and a dominant shooting performance to hand the home team a defeat in Uncasville.

Kayla McBride was the engine driving Minnesota’s offense, pouring in a game-high 23 points to lead all scorers. Her efficiency from beyond the arc was a key factor in the Lynx’s success, as Minnesota connected on 10 of 22 three-point attempts — a 45 percent clip — that kept Connecticut’s defense scrambling throughout the night. The Lynx shot 47 percent from the field overall, converting 28 of 60 field goal attempts, and added 20 made free throws on 27 attempts to round out a well-rounded offensive effort.

Courtney Williams orchestrated the Minnesota attack from the backcourt, finishing with a team-high 7 assists, while Natasha Howard was a force on the glass, pulling down 10 rebounds to anchor the Lynx’s 33-rebound performance. Minnesota also crashed the offensive boards aggressively, collecting 9 offensive rebounds that extended possessions and kept the pressure on Connecticut’s defense.

Defensively, the Lynx were equally impressive, recording 8 steals and 7 blocked shots. Those 8 steals in particular disrupted Connecticut’s rhythm and helped Minnesota generate additional scoring opportunities throughout the contest.

For the Sun, Leila Lacan was the standout performer, leading Connecticut with 15 points and distributing 6 assists in a dual effort that kept the home team competitive. Nell Angloma provided a lift on the boards, leading Connecticut with 7 rebounds, but the Sun were unable to match Minnesota’s overall efficiency and depth of production on the night.

The Lynx’s ability to get to the free throw line proved significant as well. Minnesota’s 27 free throw attempts reflected an aggressive, physical approach to attacking the basket, and while the Lynx converted at a 74 percent rate — leaving some points on the board — the volume of attempts helped them maintain separation down the stretch.

Connecticut fought to keep the game within reach, but the combination of McBride’s scoring, Howard’s rebounding dominance, and Williams’ playmaking gave Minnesota too many weapons to contain. The Lynx’s 21 team assists indicated a fluid, unselfish offensive system that consistently generated quality looks.

The six-point final margin, 86-80, reflected a competitive game that was nonetheless controlled by Minnesota for much of the evening. The loss is a setback for Connecticut, which was unable to capitalize on home-court advantage at Mohegan Sun Arena. The Lynx, meanwhile, can take confidence from a performance that showcased shooting efficiency, defensive activity, and balanced contributions across the roster.
