Lucas Museum of Narrative Art Opens in Los Angeles, Showcasing 1,300 Works

Los Angeles residents now have a new cultural landmark: the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art opened its doors on September 22 after more than a decade of planning and a $1 billion personal investment by filmmaker George Lucas and his wife, businesswoman Mellody Hobson. The museum, situated in Exposition Park, presents a 300,000‑square‑foot building designed by MAD Architects that resembles a sleek spaceship hovering over South Los Angeles.

What the museum offers

Inside, visitors can explore 30 galleries displaying over 1,300 objects from Lucas’s private collection, which spans five decades of film props, costumes, paintings, photographs and illustrated works. While the famed “Star Wars” vehicles and sculptures of Yoda and Grogu draw many fans, they account for only about 7 % of the exhibition space. The majority of the museum celebrates narrative art in all its forms – from Frida Kahlo and Norman Rockwell paintings to Gordon Parks photographs, Frank Miller comics and even anime such as “Cowboy Bebop.” Two on‑site theaters will screen early silent movies, Lucas’s student films and works by historic artists like Man Ray.

A “temple to the peoples’ art”

Lucas describes the museum as “a temple to the peoples’ art,” a place where illustrators, comic creators and other under‑appreciated artists stand alongside canonical masters. The curatorial philosophy mirrors recent moves by major institutions such as New York’s Museum of Modern Art and London’s Tate Britain, which have begun to exhibit overlooked creators alongside celebrated names.

Hobson emphasized the unifying power of narrative art, saying, “These stories may not always be true, but they bring families, communities, and nations together.” The museum’s opening exhibit, “History of Narrative Art,” guides visitors through ancient cave paintings, a replica of the Sistine Chapel ceiling, the Capitoline Wolf, and a portrait of Henry VIII, blending reproductions with digital presentations.

Local impact and challenges

The museum’s location in Exposition Park adds a cultural draw to a neighborhood already home to the Natural History Museum and the California Science Center. Its futuristic design, with tube‑like elevators and a top‑floor gallery of original Banksy murals, aims to create a spiritual experience for all who enter.

Management transitions have been rocky. Former director Sandra Jackson‑Dumont left in April, and chief curator Pilar Tompkins Rivas resigned in December, with no replacement announced. Current CEO Tracey Bates reassured the press that Lucas remains the lead curator and that his vision has not changed.

What’s next?

Lucas and Hobson acknowledge that the museum will evolve. Senior curator Ryan Linkof said the institution plans to rotate exhibitions, especially works on paper such as comics and children’s book illustrations, to keep the experience fresh. Future displays may include new loans, commissions or thematic shows that continue the museum’s mission of telling the stories that shape our culture.

With ticket prices set at $25 for adults and a range of membership options, the Lucas Museum aims to become a lasting educational resource for families and art lovers throughout Southern California.
