Two Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office deputies received well-deserved recognition on the state stage last week, as Governor Greg Abbott honored Deputies Jorge Martinez and Andrew Cavazos with the Star of Texas Award during a ceremony held September 11, 2026, in Austin.

The Star of Texas Award is one of the state’s highest honors for first responders, recognizing peace officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel who have demonstrated extraordinary valor or who have been injured or killed in the line of duty. Being selected for this distinction places Deputies Martinez and Cavazos among an elite group of Texas heroes celebrated each year by the Governor’s Office.
