LSU Coach Stands by Player’s Jersey Choice

LSU coach Lane Kiffin is standing by his decision to allow cornerback D.J. Pickett to wear the No. 5 jersey, which was previously worn by former LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels. Kiffin stated that Pickett was promised the opportunity to wear the number when he signed with LSU in December 2024.

Jersey Controversy

Daniels, who was drafted second overall by the Washington Commanders in 2024, had expressed objections to Pickett wearing the number. However, Kiffin believes that Pickett should be allowed to wear the jersey as it was promised to him. Pickett has been wearing the No. 5 jersey since August camp opened last week.

LSU’s official online store has removed replica Daniels jerseys from sale, which includes the No. 9 of 2019 Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow and the No. 3 of former star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Meanwhile, Pickett showed no interest in relinquishing the No. 5 when he spoke with reporters after Thursday’s practice.
