Loveland Catholic School Delays Start of Year Over Mold Issue

Loveland families received notice this week that St. Margaret of York Catholic School will postpone the start of the 2026‑27 academic year. The decision follows the discovery of mold in the school’s main office after it reopened for the new term.

Discovery and Immediate Response

Principal Kristin Penley explained in a letter to parents that the office, which had been closed from June 12 to August 3, was inspected on August 3 and mold was found. The school promptly engaged an industrial hygienist to evaluate the extent of the contamination and to recommend the proper steps for remediation.

Penley wrote, “We understand this change creates challenges for families, and we sincerely apologize. However, the health and wellbeing of our students, staff, and school community must remain our highest priority.” The school emphasized that professional remediation will be required to ensure the affected areas are safe before classes resume.

Remediation Plan and Timeline

The remediation process is already underway. Contractors are removing contaminated materials, cleaning surfaces, and installing air‑purification equipment as recommended by the hygienist. Penley assured families that the work will be completed “as quickly as possible without compromising quality or safety.”

While no firm opening date has been set, the school does not anticipate reopening before the week of September 7. The administration will verify that all remediation steps meet health standards before granting access to students and staff.

Impact on Instructional Time

School officials are evaluating how to make up the lost instructional days. Options under discussion include extending the school day, adding supplemental online lessons, or scheduling make‑up sessions later in the year. Penley promised that a detailed plan will be shared with families once the remediation timeline is finalized.

Community Reaction

Parents expressed appreciation for the school’s transparency and its focus on health safety. “We’re grateful the administration is taking this seriously and putting our children’s health first,” one parent said. Others noted the inconvenience of adjusting summer plans but emphasized the importance of a safe learning environment.

Looking Ahead

St. Margaret of York remains committed to providing a faith‑based education rooted in Catholic values while ensuring a healthy campus. The school will continue to update families through letters, its website, and social‑media channels as the remediation progresses.

For further information, families can contact the school office at (970) 555‑1234 or visit the school’s website.
