Louisville’s Waterfront Park, a gem offering scenic views of the city, is near the Ohio River and hosts many events. However, the noise from the interstate looms above, causing disturbance. Tyler Allen, who co-founded the group ‘8664’, has been working for over 20 years to change this by demolishing the portion of I-64 that runs across Waterfront Park.
The Proposal
Allen’s idea is to redirect traffic to the East End Bridge, which he believes is a cheaper alternative to building the Lincoln Bridge. The idea has garnered support from over 12,000 people and has recently sparked interest from national leaders like Congressman Morgan McGarvey.
Local leaders, such as Metro Councilman Ken Herndon, have long supported the idea of removal, calling the current infrastructure a ‘cancerous concrete ribbon’. Herndon believes that with new upgrades slated for the belvedere, the wheels could start turning on the idea once again.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet commissioned a review of the idea in 2008, but so far, there is no indication that they would take on the project. The cabinet has not commented on the matter.
