Louisville Ordinance Aims to Reduce Noise

A Metro councilmember is pushing for technology to help control loud noise from cars and late-night bars in Louisville. Some residents living near busy corridors say noise can be a part of daily life, especially on weekends and late at night.

Noise Complaints

Hannah Reid, who lives near Bardstown Road, said noise can be an issue near her home, especially if she had kids. Councilman Ben Reno-Weber said noise complaints are not limited to one neighborhood and that the proposed ordinance would establish specific decibel limits and distances to better define what qualifies as unreasonably loud noise.

The ordinance would also set clearer rules for when bars and restaurants can play loud music and would apply to vehicles as well. Reno-Weber said the proposal is about protecting residents’ quality of life and that every person has a right to the quiet enjoyment of their own house.

There would be several exceptions to the ordinance, including noise from emergency vehicles or sounds from festivals and sports arenas. The ordinance has passed through committee and will head to Metro Council for a vote.
