Louisiana State Police are urging motorists to be extra cautious in school zones and around school buses as students head back to school.

Safety Guidance

Trooper Eddie Thomas with LSP Troop G emphasized the importance of following traffic safety laws, particularly in school zones. Reduced speed limits are in effect during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up hours, and drivers should be aware of posted signs and flashing warning beacons.

Louisiana law prohibits the use of handheld wireless devices in posted school zones, and violators face fines starting at $250. Motorists must also yield to school crossing guards, who have the authority to direct traffic flow and stop vehicles to allow children to cross safely.

State officials also stress the importance of school bus safety laws. Drivers must stop at least 30 feet away from a stopped school bus displaying flashing red lights and an extended stop arm, and remain stopped until the bus retracts its stop arm and resumes movement.

Louisiana State Police encourage parents to review pedestrian safety rules with their children and allow extra travel time during morning and afternoon commutes to prevent rushing.
