Lou Raptakis Has Been Pouring Coffee at Lori-Ann Since 1978

There’s a coffee mug on the counter at Lori-Ann Restaurant that has someone’s name written on a piece of tape stuck to the bottom. I noticed it the first time I sat at the counter, and when I asked the woman refilling it without being asked, she just said, “Oh, that’s Ray’s.” Ray has apparently been coming in every weekday morning for longer than she could remember. That detail tells you almost everything about this place.

Lori-Ann sits on Post Road in the Hoxsie section of Warwick, the kind of stretch where you pass three auto body shops and a dry cleaner before you find it. It doesn’t announce itself. The sign is small. The parking lot fills up fast on weekend mornings, which is the only real signal that something worth stopping for is happening inside.

Lou Raptakis opened it in 1978 and has been here, more or less, ever since. He’s in his seventies now and doesn’t work every shift, but when he’s there you can feel the difference — not because he’s performing anything, but because the staff relaxes into a different gear when he’s around. His daughter has taken on more of the day-to-day, and the place has stayed steady through it all: same booths, same laminated menus, same coffee that comes fast and stays hot.

The food is diner food, and I mean that without any condescension. The corned beef hash is made from scratch, not scooped from a can, and it arrives with a crispness on the edges that takes actual attention to achieve. The omelets are generous — the Western with peppers and onions is what I usually get — and they come with home fries that are seasoned properly, not an afterthought. French toast on the weekends is thick-cut, eggy, and gone before I mean for it to be.

Lunch runs until mid-afternoon and leans on soups and sandwiches. The chowder on Fridays is worth timing a visit around. It’s creamy without being thick, and they don’t skimp on the clams. A bowl and a coffee will run you maybe nine or ten dollars, which still feels like a small miracle.

What I keep coming back to, though, isn’t any single dish. It’s the texture of the place — the way the booths fill up with contractors before seven, then shift to retirees by eight-thirty, then families by ten. Lou used to know most of them by name. His daughter is getting there. The staff remembers how you take your coffee after two or three visits, which sounds like a small thing until you’ve spent too long in places where no one looks up when you walk in.

Breakfast for two, with coffee and tip, is usually around twenty-five dollars. Cash is preferred, though they do take cards. They’re open early — around six on weekdays — and close by two or three in the afternoon, so this is not a dinner situation. Weekend mornings bring a wait, but it moves. If you go on a Tuesday at seven-fifteen, you’ll probably slide right into a counter seat and have Lou’s granddaughter ask if you want the usual before you’ve even taken your coat off.

That’s the thing about a place that’s been open since 1978. If you show up enough times, eventually you become part of it too.
