Longview Community Honors Gilbert Bernal After Tragic Mill Disaster

In Longview, Washington, the community came together in a powerful display of support and solidarity at Journey Adventist Church to honor the life of Gilbert Bernal. Bernal was one of the 11 workers who tragically lost their lives in the recent Nippon Dynawave paper mill disaster, a devastating event that has deeply affected the local community.

Community Support and Faith

More than 650 people attended the memorial service, filling the church and an overflow room, to celebrate Bernal’s life and legacy. Pastor Dan Hughes, who had known Bernal for over two decades, spoke of the profound impact Bernal had on the church and the broader community. “I knew how much he had touched me. I know how much he touched our church family. I didn’t know how much he touched the whole community,” Hughes remarked.

Bernal was remembered for his dedication to serving others, from mentoring children to volunteering at the church. His willingness to help, whether by driving children to sports practices or maintaining church facilities, was a testament to his character and faith.

Families Lean on Community

The memorial was one of several gatherings held in the aftermath of the disaster, as Longview residents rallied to support the affected families. Prayer services, vigils, fundraisers, and memorial events have been organized, reflecting the community’s commitment to standing by those in mourning.

Another victim’s family, that of John Forsberg, expressed their gratitude for the overwhelming support from Longview and Cowlitz County. In a statement, they thanked the community for the kindness, prayers, and financial support that have been extended to them during this difficult time. Forsberg’s family is focused on supporting his children, Zach and Margot, as they navigate the loss of their father.

The families of the victims, along with the community, are closely following the ongoing investigation into the cause of the disaster, hoping for answers and accountability. The incident, one of the deadliest industrial accidents in Washington state history, has underscored the close-knit nature of Longview’s mill workers, churches, and families.

As Pastor Hughes noted, the strength and unity found within the community and faith are vital during such trying times. The memorial for Bernal was not only a celebration of his life but also a reflection of the enduring bonds that hold the Longview community together.
