Long Commutes Not Linked to Highest Car Insurance Costs, Study Finds

Recent data from CarInsurance.com, based on U.S. Census Bureau figures for 387 metropolitan areas, reveals a surprising disconnect between commute length and auto insurance costs. The longest‑commuting metro, Stockton‑Lodi, California, where nearly one‑in‑five drivers spend an hour or more each way, actually enjoys insurance premiums that are about 2% below the California average.

Commute‑Premium Mismatch Across the Country

The analysis found almost no overlap between the metros with the longest driver commutes and those with the highest full‑coverage insurance rates. New Orleans‑Metairie, Louisiana, tops the list for premium cost at $5,449 per year but ranks a modest 175th for commute length. Conversely, Las Vegas‑Henderson‑North Las Vegas, Nevada, ranks among the lightest‑commuting metros (371st) yet carries the second‑highest premiums at $4,928 annually.

State Averages Often Exceeded by Worst‑Commute Areas

In nine of the ten metros with the longest commutes, insurance rates fall below their state averages. For example, the Winchester, Virginia metro’s average premium is 3.6% higher than the Virginia average but still 15.2% lower than West Virginia’s statewide rate. Only New York‑Newark‑Jersey City, NY‑NJ, which ranks 13th for commute length, sees premiums more than 30% above the New York state average.

Why Location Matters More Than Mileage

Insurers prioritize local risk factors—such as claim costs, theft frequency, accident rates, and repair expenses—over the number of miles driven. As Shivani Gite, a contributing researcher at CarInsurance.com, explains, “Your ZIP Code often has a bigger impact on your premium than the number of miles you drive.” While longer commutes can increase risk, the neighborhood’s overall risk profile typically has a greater effect on rates.

Regional Trends in Commutes and Costs

Across the nation, about two‑thirds of the metros analyzed showed a slight increase in hour‑plus commutes, with the average share rising from roughly 4.7% to 5.0% of drivers. The fastest‑growing commute times appear in Sun Belt metros such as Sierra Vista‑Douglas, AZ; Killeen‑Temple, TX; Punta Gorda, FL; and Cape Coral‑Fort Myers, FL. Conversely, metros like Santa Cruz‑Watsonville, CA; Hammond, LA; Washington‑Arlington‑Alexandria, DC‑VA‑MD‑WV; Honolulu, HI; San Jose‑Sunnyvale‑Santa Clara, CA; and Los Angeles‑Long Beach‑Anaheim, CA are seeing modest easing of commute times.

Carpool vs. Solo Driving

Data also shows carpoolers are more likely than solo drivers to endure hour‑plus commutes—7.8% versus 5.9% nationally. The disparity is most pronounced in Mount Vernon‑Anacortes, WA, where 24.5% of carpoolers face long commutes compared with 9% of solo drivers. This suggests that many carpool arrangements are formed to share already lengthy trips rather than to reduce travel time.

Fuel Costs Vary Widely by State

Beyond insurance, fuel expenses differ dramatically across the country. For a typical 21.2‑mile round‑trip commute, 250 days a year, at 27.2 mpg, the estimated annual fuel cost is about $823 at the national average gas price. California drivers would pay roughly $1,146, while Indiana drivers would spend about $679, reflecting Indiana’s temporary suspension of its fuel tax through early October 2026.

Implications for Drivers

For motorists, the takeaway is clear: where you live influences your auto insurance premium more than how long you sit in traffic. Understanding local risk factors—such as theft rates and claim histories—can help drivers make informed decisions about coverage and budgeting for transportation costs.
