The London Underground, also known as “The Tube,” is the oldest subway or metro transit system in the world. There are currently 272 stations open and 249 miles of active lines.
History
The London Underground began running on January 9, 1863, with 40,000 passengers on the first day. Over the years, the system has expanded to include multiple lines, including the Metropolitan Line, Hammersmith & City Line, District Line, and Circle Line.
In recent years, the London Underground has continued to evolve, with the introduction of new lines, such as the Elizabeth Line, and the implementation of safety measures, including over 12,000 CCTV cameras.
The London Underground has also been the target of several terrorist attacks, including the 2005 bombings that killed 52 people and injured hundreds more.
