London Proposal Sparks Outrage

A proposal by Westminster Council to curb ‘vertical drinking’ in London’s West End pubs has sparked outrage among locals and business owners. The plan, which is currently out to public consultation, aims to reduce excessive drunkenness and encourage pubs to provide more seating for customers to enjoy their drinks.

Concerns Over Pub Culture

Many have expressed concerns that the proposal will harm the traditional pub culture in the area, where standing and socializing is a big part of the experience. Lesley Lewis, who has run Soho’s famous French House pub for 37 years, said that people want to enjoy themselves in Soho and that the proposal would stifle this.

The proposal has also been criticized by London’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, who described it as ‘restrictive and anti-growth’. The Night Time Industries Association, a lobby group representing businesses involved in Britain’s nightlife, has also urged its members to respond to the consultation, saying that standing in pubs has always been part of Britain’s pub culture.

Impact on Local Businesses

The proposal has raised concerns about the impact on local businesses, particularly in the West End, which is known for its vibrant nightlife. Many pubs in the area are already struggling due to rising costs and taxes, and the proposal could lead to further closures. According to data from the British Beer and Pub Association, there were 44,650 pubs nationwide in 2025, compared with 60,800 in 2000.
