Lollapalooza Marks Big Firsts

Lollapalooza’s third day was marked by rain, mud, and big firsts. Despite a four-hour delay due to torrential downpour, fans made the most of the time lost, cut set times, and muddy festival grounds.

Headliners and Community Events

The evening’s scheduled headliners, including Olivia Dean, DJ Trixie Mattel, and Jennie, as well as Geese and local DJ Whethan, were still on the schedule. However, some acts, such as the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, were cut due to concerns about instrument damage from the continued rain.

Members of Chicago’s sapphic community gathered for an impromptu ‘Lesbian Mud Wrestling’ event, which was organized by Lindsay Perrin, an Indianapolis resident. The event drew a large crowd, with women jumping into the mud and participating in the wrestling match.

First-Time Experiences

The festival also offered a milestone experience for 14 Chicago teens attending Lollapalooza for the first time through a partnership between My Block, My Hood, My City and Airbnb. The outing was part of the nonprofit’s Explorers program, which introduces young people to new neighborhoods, careers, and experiences.

Ayden Mahaffey, an 18-year-old from the South Side, attended his first Lollapalooza and was excited to see Olivia Dean perform. Tyrice Hunt, also 18 and from the South Side, joined the program to see Leon Thomas and spend time with friends.
