Akron residents have a reason to raise a glass this summer as Lock 15 Brewing Co. marks its eighth year of operation in the historic Swinehart Tire Factory building. Owner Joe Karpinski, who opened the brewery in 2018, said the milestone was a pleasant surprise during a recent interview with Signal Akron.
Local roots and a loyal following
Lock 15 has become a staple of the Cascade Valley neighborhood, drawing patrons from the nearby Towpath Trail, Cascade Park and the Mustill Store Museum. The brewery’s large open‑air patio, a favorite spot during warm months, is slated for a permanent shade structure to improve comfort for diners.
“We still come across people who’ve never been here yet from Akron, which I feel like it’s kind of crazy since we’ve been around for eight years,” Karpinski said. “We have a cool place.”
Menu highlights and seasonal brews
The beer program blends year‑round staples with rotating seasonal offerings that change every six months. This summer’s lineup includes the Over the Top Berliner Weisse, a pineapple‑cherry sour, and the spicy Station 3 Habanero IPA, both of which have proven popular with guests.
On the food side, the rotating burger selection remains a crowd‑pleaser. Karpinski highlighted the current green chile bacon double smashburger as a top seller, while the Nashville hot chicken sandwich also ranks among the season’s favorites.
Economic pressures and business resilience
Like many small‑business owners, Karpinski feels the impact of rising gas prices and higher food costs. He noted that total headcounts have declined compared with previous years, a trend he attributes to broader economic pressures.
“Total headcounts are definitely down over last year and previous years,” he explained. “We’ve been doing very well with managing those costs to be able to stay in business, and really that’s how you do it.”
By focusing on cost control and maintaining a menu of made‑from‑scratch dishes, Lock 15 continues to operate profitably while serving as a gathering place for families, cyclists and casual diners alike.
Community recognition
Lock 15 Brewing Co. remains a repeat winner in Akron’s annual “Best of the City” awards, underscoring its status as a beloved local establishment. The brewery’s success reflects both the dedication of its staff and the support of the surrounding community.
