Hebert Kaleth Ibarra Castro, a 20-year-old mariachi, was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on June 25. His wife, Marisol Pantoj, said Ibarra Castro was arrested while driving in China Grove. According to ICE records, Ibarra Castro entered the United States illegally at an unknown date and time.

However, Pantoj claims Ibarra Castro entered the U.S. legally with a B-2 visa, which expired in 2020. Ibarra Castro’s mom expressed her concern, stating that the situation brings back painful memories from 16 years ago when they were forced to flee their home in Monterrey due to a dangerous cartel. State Rep. Barbara Gervin Hawkins and U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro are working to assist Ibarra Castro.
Pantoj and Ibarra Castro were in the process of obtaining a green card, but the process is time-consuming. Ibarra Castro has a hearing scheduled for the week of July 6, and his family hopes for his release soon.
