Texarkana, Texas – The Regional Arts Center has welcomed a thought‑provoking new exhibition titled “Us & Them,” created by Magnolia‑based artist Anna Zusman. The show runs through October 31 and aims to spark conversation about how residents perceive both their own neighborhoods and those of others.
Art that Mirrors Community Life
Zusman explains that the exhibit reflects a growing sense of polarization she observes nationwide, yet she believes the local community remains focused on the positive. “It’s hard to miss that the world is getting really polarized these days, and we tend to divide the world into us and them,” she said. “When we look at our own community, we generally see the positive things. It’s not that we ignore problems, but we choose to highlight what’s working.”
The centerpiece of the exhibition features two nearly identical model homes. One side displays scenes of everyday joy—families gathering, children playing, and neighbors helping one another—while the opposite side portrays more difficult moments such as neglect, conflict, and hardship. By placing these contrasting images side by side, Zusman hopes visitors will consider how their own attitudes shape perceptions of other communities.
Interactive Participation
Beyond visual art, the exhibit invites audience involvement. Guests can fill out a brief questionnaire noting one thing they appreciate about Texarkana and one area they feel needs improvement. Responses are projected in real time onto a large screen, creating a communal dialogue that underscores both pride and the desire for progress.
“It’s an exhibit that encourages the viewer to look beyond us and them, and hopefully start thinking about the good things in other people’s communities and possibly about the problems within their own,” Zusman added.
Supporting Local Culture
The Regional Arts Center, a hub for cultural events in the twin‑city area, sees the exhibition as a timely addition to its programming. By spotlighting a local artist and encouraging civic reflection, the center reinforces its mission to foster community engagement through the arts.
Visitors of all ages are welcome to explore the installation, share their thoughts, and contribute to an ongoing conversation about unity, responsibility, and the shared values that bind Texarkana’s residents together.
Practical Details
The “Us & Them” exhibition is open daily during regular center hours until October 31. No admission fee is required, though donations to support the center’s educational initiatives are appreciated. For more information, see the Regional Arts Center’s website or contact the center directly.
