Louisville’s Highlands neighborhood has recently experienced violence, unruly crowds, street takeovers, and gunfire, prompting LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey to address the issue and outline measures to combat the disturbances.
Disturbances on Bardstown Road
Bardstown Road, a corridor known for its vibrant nightlife, has seen patrons of local businesses engaging in fights, firing guns, and causing disruptions in the streets into the early morning hours. These ongoing problems have frustrated residents, business owners, and law enforcement.
Chief Humphrey clarified that these street takeovers are not always caused by teenagers. Of the nearly two dozen arrests made by the Louisville Metro Police Department’s summer task force this past weekend, only four were juveniles.
Humphrey said proactive measures include increased police presence on Bardstown Road and meetings with neighborhood groups. The chief also supports renewed discussions about pushing bar closing times back from 4 a.m. to 2 a.m.
Humphrey expressed hope that the negative attention surrounding the disturbances would help deter further incidents. “I just want people to come here, have a good time, and hang out, safely,” he said.
