Jonesboro, Ark. – The ninth annual Living Legends Awards are set to recognize local leaders, advocates and creators whose work reflects the spirit of Black storytelling and community service. The awards will be presented during Black History Month celebrations early next year, and nominations are open throughout October.
How to Nominate
Community members can submit nominations through the online form at astate.qualtrics.com until Saturday, Oct. 31. Committee member Carnesha Ben emphasizes that the process relies on residents who have witnessed the impact of potential honorees firsthand.
“It’s important for our community to take part in the nomination process because many individuals who make the greatest impact do so quietly, consistently and without seeking recognition,” Ben said. “When people nominate those they have seen making a difference, it ensures that the Living Legends Awards truly reflect the voices and values of the community we serve.”
This Year’s Theme
The 2026 theme, “From Black Print Culture to Digital Blackness,” highlights the evolution of Black storytelling—from historic printed traditions to the digital platforms shaping today’s narratives. Ben explained that the theme honors how Black voices have preserved history, built community and driven social change across generations.

What the Committee Looks For
Nominees should demonstrate clear contributions to Arkansas State University (A‑State) or surrounding communities through leadership, advocacy, collaboration or service. Strong nominations include specific examples such as projects led, initiatives supported, or tangible ways the nominee has positively influenced others.
