Lionel Messi added to his accolades by breaking the all-time record for men’s World Cup goals, surpassing Germany’s Miroslav Klose. Messi scored his 17th World Cup goal vs. Austria at Dallas Stadium off a feed from Facundo Medina in the 38th minute, giving his team a 1-0 lead.

Messi, who turns 39 on June 24, entered the 2026 tournament with 13 goals and a strong chance to either tie or break the mark following his seven-goal run in 2022 that culminated in his first ever World Cup triumph. French star Kylian Mbappe is also in the hunt to surpass the 16-goal mark, currently having 14 goals to his name.
