Lionel Messi added to his accolades by breaking the all-time record for men’s World Cup goals, surpassing Germany’s Miroslav Klose. Messi scored his 17th World Cup goal vs. Austria at Dallas Stadium off a feed from Facundo Medina in the 38th minute, giving his team a 1-0 lead.
Messi’s Record-Breaking Goal
Messi, who turns 39 on June 24, entered the 2026 tournament with 13 goals and a strong chance to either tie or break the mark following his seven-goal run in 2022 that culminated in his first ever World Cup triumph. He got closer to the record following a stunning hat trick to open the tournament vs. Algeria in a 3-0 win in Kansas City.
French star Kylian Mbappe is also in the hunt to surpass the 16-goal mark. Mbappe, 27, scored a brace vs. Senegal to temporarily tie Messi. France returns to action later on Monday against Iraq in Philadelphia.
