Lincoln’s 2017 Sydney Loofe disappearance revisited in new true‑crime series

Lincoln, Neb. – Nine years after Sydney Loofe vanished on a second Tinder date, KETV anchors Bill Schammert and retired Lincoln Bureau Chief Andrew Ozaki are leading a new episode of the true‑crime series Hometown Tragedy to re‑examine the case.

Background of the 2017 disappearance

In November 2017, 24‑year‑old Sydney Loofe arranged to meet a woman she had matched with on Tinder for a second date. The meeting never occurred. Sydney stopped answering her phone and missed work, prompting friends and family to launch a frantic search.

Investigators traced her last cellphone ping to Wilber, a quiet town about 40 miles west of Lincoln. The case quickly captured the attention of the Lincoln community, leading to extensive media coverage and a lingering sense of unease.

New findings and the role of “Audrey”

Recent investigative work revealed that the woman Sydney planned to meet, known only as “Audrey,” was not who she claimed to be. A friend created a fake Tinder profile to engage the real “Audrey,” who eventually provided a phone number. That number belonged not to a woman named Audrey but to Bailey Boswell, a resident of the area where Sydney’s phone was last located.

Further digging uncovered that Boswell was living with a man named Aubrey Trail, shifting the focus of the investigation toward a new set of suspects and motives.

Community reaction and lingering rumors

The case has been marked by unsettling online videos, shifting narratives, and even rumors of witchcraft circulating in local forums. While sensational claims have surfaced, the anchors emphasize that the investigation remains grounded in factual leads and evidence.

Very Local’s new episode

The latest episode of Hometown Tragedy will stream on the Very Local app beginning September 23. Very Local is a streaming platform that offers local news, original series, and community‑focused programming. Viewers can download the free app to watch the full episode and other local content.

Schammert and Ozaki stress that revisiting the case serves both to honor Sydney’s memory and to keep the public informed about any new developments. They encourage anyone with information to contact Lincoln law enforcement.
