Lincoln police safely end high‑speed chase after driver endangers officer

Lincoln Police Department (LPD) responded to a report of an erratic driver on the evening of September 6, 2026. Officers located the vehicle at the intersection of 27th and Superior streets and attempted a routine traffic stop. The driver refused to comply and accelerated away, prompting a pursuit through the city.

Chase moves toward 27th Street gas station

The suspect continued his flight until reaching Casey’s on 27th Street, a local gas station where he briefly stopped. While the driver was refueling, he nearly struck an officer who was positioned near the pumps. The officer stepped back just in time, avoiding injury, and the driver then resumed his escape.

Pursuit continues to Interstate 80

LPD officers maintained visual contact and coordinated with state troopers as the suspect merged onto Interstate 80. The chase proceeded eastward until the vehicle reached mile marker 407, where officers were able to safely bring the driver to a stop without further incident.

Driver taken into custody

After the vehicle was halted, officers confirmed the driver was alone in the car. He was placed under arrest and transported to the Lincoln Police Department for processing. No injuries were reported among the officers or the public.

Department response

Chief of Police Mike McGowan praised the professionalism of the officers involved, stating, “Our deputies acted quickly and responsibly, protecting both the community and each other. This outcome demonstrates the effectiveness of our training and the dedication of our men and women in blue.” He added that the department will review the incident to identify any opportunities for improved safety protocols during high‑speed pursuits.

Public safety reminder

LPD reminds residents that refusing to stop for a lawful traffic stop is a serious offense that endangers lives. Officers are urged to obey all lawful commands from police and to pull over safely when instructed. The department encourages anyone who witnesses unsafe driving to report it promptly, helping keep Lincoln’s streets safe for all.

For further information about traffic safety initiatives or to report suspicious activity, Lincoln residents can contact the non‑emergency line at 402‑555‑1234 or visit the department’s website.
