The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C. has undergone a costly renovation, but the results have been disappointing. The pool’s new liner, which was installed at a cost of over $16 million, has faded from its original ‘American flag blue’ color to a dull gray.
Renovation Problems
President Trump had touted the renovation as a major success, but the project has been plagued by problems. The pool was initially set to be completed by July 4, but the deadline was missed. The water in the pool was also beset by an algae bloom, and pieces of the new coating began to peel off the bottom.
Trump has blamed vandals for the peeling paint, but critics argue that the problem is due to shoddy repair work. The president has also claimed that vandals made a ‘350-foot gash’ in the liner, but no large slash marks were visible during a recent inspection.
Investigation and Charges
A former Olympic canoeist, David Hearn, has been charged with deliberately damaging the Reflecting Pool. Hearn has pleaded not guilty and claims that he was simply examining the peeled sealant when he was told to by a park worker.
At least three other people have been charged with misdemeanors for allegedly removing pieces of paint from the pool. All three have pleaded not guilty.
