Lincoln, Neb. – On Oct. 6, volunteers with the Capital Humane Society (CHS) were alerted to four severely underweight dogs discovered along the shoreline of Conestoga Lake. The two‑year‑old husky mixes, named Teddy, Maisie, Milo and Winnie, each weighed ten pounds or less – roughly half the weight a healthy dog of their size should carry.
Critical condition and immediate care
CHS staff transported the dogs to the organization’s Admissions and Assessment Center for emergency evaluation. Teddy and Maisie were in the most dire state; both could not stand and showed signs of extreme dehydration and anemia. They were rushed to a veterinary clinic for life‑saving treatment and hospitalization.
Unfortunately, Teddy’s injuries were too severe for recovery. After a thorough assessment, CHS made the compassionate decision to humanely euthanize him, sparing him further suffering.
Hope for the remaining pups
Maisie is now eating on her own and can walk, but she still requires intravenous fluids and constant monitoring to stabilize her condition. Milo and Winnie, while slightly more stable, remain under close veterinary supervision and are receiving nutritional support to help them gain weight.
“These dogs came to us in a heartbreaking state,” said a CHS spokesperson. “Our team is dedicated to giving them the care they need to survive and thrive. We ask the community to join us in supporting these vulnerable animals.”
How the community can help
Capital Humane Society relies on local generosity to fund emergency medical care, food, and shelter for rescued animals. The organization is seeking monetary donations, as well as supplies such as high‑calorie dog food, IV fluids, and blankets.
Donors can contribute directly through CHS’s website or by visiting the admissions center during business hours. All contributions go toward the immediate needs of the rescued dogs and the broader mission of protecting animals throughout Lincoln and the surrounding area.
