Lexington’s Share Fair Promotes Recycling of School Supplies

In a commendable initiative, Lexington is hosting its second annual Share Fair, inviting residents to donate lightly used school supplies. This effort, spearheaded by city official Lizzie Barrick, aims to reduce waste and alleviate the financial pressure on families and educators as they prepare for the upcoming school year.

Community-Driven Recycling

The Share Fair is being held at the city’s Electronics Recycling Center, repurposing the facility for this community-focused event. Residents are encouraged to drop off school supplies that are in good condition but no longer needed, allowing these items to find new homes with students and teachers who can use them.

Barrick, who conceived the idea, explained, “When I came into this role with the city, I was thinking about keeping waste out of the landfill whenever possible, so I connected the dots.” She noted that the timing aligns with spring cleaning, a period when many families discover items that can be passed on rather than discarded.

Supporting Local Schools

The collected supplies will first benefit Lexington Middle School, with any remaining items distributed to other schools in the area. This initiative not only supports the environment by reducing landfill waste but also helps families and teachers manage the often burdensome cost of school supplies.

Residents can participate by dropping off their donations at the Electronics Recycling Center located at 1306 Versailles Rd. The collection runs through June 22, with specific instructions to drive to the back of the parking lot toward the shipping dock area and look for garage #7 and the box labeled “Share Fair.”

This program highlights the importance of community involvement in addressing both environmental and economic challenges, reinforcing the values of stewardship and support for local families and educators.
