Lexington planners have recommended approval of new zoning rules for data centers in Fayette County, Kentucky. The proposed rules would limit the size of data centers to 40,000 square feet and cap energy use at 25 megawatts.
Proposed Requirements
The proposed requirements include a 24-hour limit to noise levels at 30 decibels and increasing the distance from schools, daycares, and healthcare facilities from 1000 feet to 1500 feet.
The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Planning Commission made these recommendations after listening to residents and business owners during a meeting on July 30. The commission’s director of planning, Jim Duncan, expressed satisfaction with the turnout and the passion shown by the community.
The recommendations will be presented to the city council on August 18. The data center moratorium in Lexington is set to end on October 31 but can be extended.
