Lexington Humane Society’s Mutt Strut Brings Community Together

On a sunny Monday morning, Coldstream Park in Lexington, Kentucky, was alive with the joyful barks of dogs and the laughter of families participating in the Lexington Humane Society’s annual Mutt Strut walk-a-thon. This cherished event has been a staple in the community for over 25 years, offering a unique opportunity for families to bond with their pets while supporting a worthy cause.

A Tradition of Compassion

Meghan Hawkins, the director of development at the Lexington Humane Society, shared the significance of the event. “We’ve done it for at least 25 plus years. It’s always such a fun event for us,” Hawkins remarked. The Mutt Strut not only brings joy to participants but also raises essential funds for the care of thousands of animals each year.

The event featured a variety of attractions, including vendors from local businesses, food trucks, and a Starbucks station offering free coffee and pup cups. Volunteers were on hand at the LHS booth, providing information and assistance to attendees.

Puppy Love for a Cause

A highlight of the event was the opportunity for attendees to spend time in a puppy pen for a $5 donation. “For a donation, you get inside the pen and let these three puppies just climb and love all over you,” Hawkins explained. These interactions not only provide joy to participants but also support the Humane Society’s mission to care for animals in need.

Currently, a litter of puppies in foster care is benefiting from the funds raised. “This puppy came in a few weeks ago with two siblings. They’ve been in foster care, which is always the best outcome for them,” Hawkins noted. Foster care allows these young animals to thrive in a safe environment away from the shelter.

Continuing Support

For those who missed the Mutt Strut, there are still numerous ways to support the Lexington Humane Society. Hawkins encourages community members to visit the shelter, volunteer, foster animals, or make donations through their website. Additionally, the next event, Doggie Paddle, is scheduled for September 12th at the Southland pool.

Through events like the Mutt Strut, the Lexington Humane Society continues to foster a sense of community and compassion, ensuring that animals in need receive the care and support they deserve.
