ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Students from Lew Wallace Elementary rode ABQ Ride electric buses downtown to plant flowers in celebration of Earth Day.
The event took place at the Alvarado Transportation Center in downtown Albuquerque on Earth Day. Students planted flowers as part of the city’s spring activities.
This was the third year the city has run the program. Organizers said they have run it before because it gives students a chance to be outside and learn about caring for public spaces.
“We just had some such good feedback over the years when the kids get to get out for a little bit and enjoy the beautiful spring air,” said Leslie Keener with ABQ Ride. “And then also this is lasting for them to be able to come back throughout the summer and see the work that they’ve done.”
The city said it hoped the ride and planting would encourage students and their families to try public transportation more often. The use of electric buses also highlighted cleaner travel options for the community.
Organizers plan to continue the event in future years. They say the hands-on work and the chance to return and see the flowers grow help teach stewardship and may boost transit ridership over time.
