Lego enthusiasts and architecture admirers alike have a new challenge to look forward to: the 12,060-piece Sagrada Família set. This ambitious model, unveiled by Lego, commemorates the 100th anniversary of the death of Antoni Gaudí, the visionary architect behind Barcelona’s iconic church.
A Tribute to Gaudí’s Masterpiece
The Sagrada Família, known as the world’s tallest church, took 144 years to complete. Now, Lego invites builders to recreate this architectural marvel on a smaller scale. The set stands 62 centimeters (24 inches) tall and is priced at $799.99. Pre-orders are available, with the official release set for November 1.
One of the standout features of the Lego model is its stained glass window effect, designed to mimic the vibrant colors that illuminate the real basilica. According to Lego’s Design Master, Rok Žgalin Kobe, the goal was to honor Gaudí’s vision by capturing the basilica’s complexity and ambition in a way that offers an immersive building experience.
Historical Significance
Construction of the Sagrada Família began in 1882, with Gaudí’s design featuring 18 towers symbolizing biblical figures. Despite Gaudí’s death in 1926, with only a fraction of the church completed, the project continued for decades, often deemed unbuildable due to its intricate design and the loss of original plans during the Spanish Civil War.
The church was finally completed in February 2026, and Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to inaugurate the Tower of Jesus Christ on the centenary of Gaudí’s passing. This event marks a significant moment in architectural history, celebrating both the completion of a monumental project and the enduring legacy of Gaudí’s work.
