Legendary WWE announcer Jim Ross to undergo second brain surgery

Longtime wrestling broadcaster Jim Ross, affectionately known to fans as “Good Ol’ J.R.,” shared a personal health update this week. Ross said he is scheduled for a second brain surgery on Wednesday morning to correct a problem with the shunt that was placed during his first operation.

Background on the first procedure

Months ago Ross underwent brain surgery to have a shunt inserted, a device that helps drain excess fluid and alleviate memory difficulties he had been experiencing. After that operation he was open about suffering “blistering headaches” that kept him awake at night.

What the upcoming surgery entails

The upcoming procedure will focus on adjusting the shunt to ensure proper fluid flow. Ross posted on social media, “Getting another brain surgery Wednesday morning to address an issue with my shunt. Positive thoughts appreciated. Thanks,” indicating his desire for supportive messages from the wrestling community.

Ross’s career highlights

Ross joined WWE in 1993 and quickly became one of the sport’s most recognizable voices. His energetic commentary helped define the broadcast style of the Attitude Era in the late 1990s, calling matches featuring legends such as “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, The Rock and The Undertaker. Beyond the microphone, Ross served as WWE’s head of talent relations, playing a key role in recruiting and developing new wrestling talent.

Beyond the ring

In addition to his on‑air work, Ross has authored memoirs, including Slobberknocker: My Life in Wrestling, and hosts the popular podcast “Grilling JR,” where he discusses wrestling history and shares personal anecdotes from his decades‑long career.

Community response

Fans and fellow commentators have flooded Ross’s social channels with messages of encouragement, praising his contributions to the industry and wishing him a swift recovery. The outpouring reflects the deep connection Ross has built with the wrestling community over more than three decades.

While the surgery is a personal health matter, Ross’s openness about his medical challenges underscores the importance of addressing neurological issues promptly and seeking appropriate treatment. His willingness to share his experience may encourage others facing similar health concerns to consult medical professionals and consider necessary interventions.
