Lebanon has taken a significant step in enhancing its regional connectivity with the inauguration of its second international airport, René Mouawad Airport. Located in the coastal village of Kleiat in the Akkar region, the airport is positioned about 100 kilometers north of Beirut and just 5 kilometers from the Syrian border. Boosting Regional Development

The inauguration ceremony was led by Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, who emphasized the importance of this project in promoting justice and balanced development across Lebanon’s regions. Transportation Minister Fayez Rasamny highlighted the government’s goal for the airport to be operational within weeks, initially offering flights to Istanbul, Mersin, and Dubai. Future plans include expanding routes to Athens, Cairo, and Medina, Saudi Arabia. This expansion is expected to alleviate pressure on Beirut’s Rafik Hariri International Airport, which has been operating near full capacity, especially during the Syrian conflict.

A Tribute to René Mouawad

The airport is named in honor of the late President-elect René Mouawad, who was tragically assassinated in 1989 shortly after his election. His presidency was a beacon of hope during Lebanon’s civil war, and the airport’s naming serves as a tribute to his legacy.

As Lebanon continues to navigate its economic and political challenges, the opening of René Mouawad Airport represents a hopeful step towards greater connectivity and development for the nation.
