Leawood, Kan. – The Leawood City Council voted unanimously on Monday night to name Andrew Grove as the city’s next fire chief, with his appointment set to begin on Sept. 8. Grove brings nearly three decades of experience from the Overland Park Fire Department, where he has served in every rank from firefighter to deputy chief of operations.
Council approval and transition
Mayor Marc Elkins introduced Grove’s credentials during the council meeting, highlighting his progression through the ranks of lieutenant, captain, battalion chief and deputy chief of operations. “Andrew brings extensive operational experience, proven leadership and a strong understanding of fire and emergency services in our region,” Elkins said. “We are excited to welcome him to Leawood and look forward to the leadership he will provide as we continue building on the fire department’s strong tradition of service to our community.”
Deputy Fire Chief Scott Gilmore, who has been leading the department on an interim basis since former Chief Colin Fitzgerald retired on July 24, will remain in his role until Grove assumes command. Fitzgerald’s 15‑year tenure as chief concluded after a long career in public safety and firefighting.
Family tradition of service
The council also noted that Grove continues a family legacy of fire‑fighting; he is a fifth‑generation firefighter, underscoring a deep‑rooted commitment to protecting the community.
Although Grove was not present at the council meeting, his appointment was widely supported by city officials who see his regional experience as a valuable asset for Leawood’s fire department.
What the appointment means for Leawood
The new chief will inherit a department that has focused on modernizing equipment, expanding community outreach, and enhancing emergency response protocols. City leaders expect Grove’s background in operations and leadership to further those initiatives and strengthen collaboration with neighboring fire districts, including Overland Park.
Leawood residents can anticipate continued emphasis on fire safety education, rapid response times, and the integration of new technologies that improve both prevention and emergency services.
Looking ahead
As the city prepares for Grove’s start date, the fire department will conduct a formal handover with Deputy Chief Gilmore to ensure a seamless transition. The council’s unanimous vote reflects broad confidence in Grove’s ability to lead the department forward.
Leawood’s fire chief appointment is part of the city’s ongoing effort to maintain high standards of public safety and community service, reinforcing the city’s reputation as a safe and well‑managed community for families.
