The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has a workforce housing development program that offers affordable apartments to district employees. Nearly two dozen people who work for LAUSD have the opportunity to live near their workplace without breaking the bank.
Affordable Housing Options
The program, which dates back more than a decade, currently provides a total of 185 apartments across several locations. At Norwood Learning Village, developed by Thomas Safran and Associates, rents for units are based on up to 60% of income. A three-bedroom unit can cost from $866 to nearly $2,600.
Rudy De Los Santos, a case manager for LAUSD, and her son have lived at the village for seven years. "It’s been a blessing," De Los Santos said, adding that before moving into the community, she had to work two jobs to hold onto her apartment and still lived far from her work.
Expansion Plans
The LAUSD housing program works by having district-owned properties financed by nonprofit housing developers. The district said it does not use LAUSD funds to construct the housing developments. More sites are being reviewed in four neighborhoods to add more affordable housing, which is needed.
