Laurel Highlands Middle School Begins Mold Remediation Ahead of New Term

Laurel Highlands School District announced Wednesday that it has engaged a professional restoration firm to address mold and mildew found inside the middle school building. The district posted the update on its Facebook page after learning last week that high humidity had caused condensation on pipe insulation, creating conditions for fungal growth.

Assessment and remediation plan

The district met with Firewater, a Pittsburgh‑based restoration company, to develop a comprehensive remediation strategy. Firewater will bring a certified environmental hygienist and a specialized engineer to sample classrooms and evaluate any lingering environmental concerns. Their work includes replacing affected pipe insulation and ceiling tiles, removing all traces of mold and mildew with specialized equipment, and sanitizing the affected areas.

District officials emphasized that surface testing indicated the mold is not harmful and that air‑quality assessments showed no immediate risk to students or staff. Nevertheless, administrators said they are proceeding with a full remediation plan “out of an abundance of caution and commitment to safety.”

Timeline and communication

According to the district’s earlier Facebook post, remediation work is on track to be completed by Friday. The school’s Meet the Teacher Night is scheduled for Monday night, provided the cleanup stays on schedule. Classes are set to begin on Aug. 25.

Assistant Superintendent Jessica Scott confirmed on Wednesday that the district’s administrative team will review the preliminary reports from the environmental specialists and share them with the public once they are available. “We are taking the utmost precautions to ensure the health and safety of our students and staff—it remains our highest priority,” the statement read.

Community response

Parents and community members have been encouraged to stay informed through the district’s social‑media channels. The district pledged total transparency regarding facility matters and thanked families for their patience as the work proceeds.

Firewater’s involvement includes ongoing sampling of individual rooms, with remediation performed as needed. The district expects the comprehensive approach will address any hidden issues and prevent future mold growth.

Looking ahead

With the remediation plan moving forward, district officials are focused on ensuring a safe learning environment for the upcoming school year. The district will continue to provide updates as the environmental specialists finalize their findings and as any additional steps become necessary.
