Frequent riders of Las Vegas public transit are reassessing their safety after a shooting near the Bonneville Transit Center injured three individuals Sunday evening. The incident occurred shortly before 7 p.m. at the intersection of First Street and East Bonneville Avenue, close to the downtown transit hub.
Police response and investigation
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) reported that officers found three shooting victims, including a person identified as the suspected shooter. All three were transported to a nearby hospital; their conditions have not yet been released. LVMPD continues to investigate the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Rider reactions
Patrina Dyas, a regular bus commuter, said the event has made her feel uneasy while using public transportation. “A little tense,” she explained, noting that the shooting happened near a stop she uses daily. “Anything can happen at any time, so you really can’t say if it’s safer at nighttime. People really get you in the daytime too.”
Another rider, who asked to be identified only as Kain, said he has generally felt safe at the transit center and has observed security officers monitoring the area. “When I get off the bus right there, all of the security guards are pretty chill, but they also pay attention,” he said. Kain added that security personnel have stepped in to de‑escalate situations when needed.
Transit authority’s safety measures
The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) reiterated that safety and security remain top priorities. The agency confirmed that the Bonneville Transit Center is patrolled by security officers and monitored by video surveillance. RTC also offers a safety app that allows riders to report concerns directly to transit officials.
In a statement, RTC said, “The safety and security of our passengers, operators and security officers remain our top priority. Our thoughts are with the officer who was injured and everyone affected by Sunday’s shooting at the Bonneville Transit Center. Because the incident remains under investigation by LVMPD, we cannot comment on its specific circumstances. RTC staff and our contracted security provider are cooperating fully, and questions about the shooting should be directed to LVMPD.”
Community advice
As the investigation proceeds, frequent riders are encouraging fellow commuters to stay alert. Dyas advised, “Beware of your surroundings and, you know, watch where you’re going.” The RTC urges passengers to use the safety app and remain vigilant while traveling.
