The Las Cruces Police Department is accepting applications for its next 22-week paid police academy, scheduled to begin in January 2027. Applications opened on Monday, July 6, and must be submitted by September 16. The 22-week paid academy is followed by a six-week pre-academy designed to prepare recruits for training.
Academy Details
Police cadets earn a starting wage of $24 per hour during the academy. After graduation, recruits become officer trainees earning $26 per hour. Those who successfully complete a one-year probationary period are promoted to patrol officer with a starting wage of $30.28 per hour.
The Las Cruces Police Department is also offering hiring incentives ranging from $11,000 to $30,000 for recruits who commit to three years of service. Incentive amounts vary based on education and military experience, and some out-of-area recruits may qualify for up to $5,000 in relocation assistance.
Applicants must be at least 19 years old when the academy begins, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, have no felony convictions, and be U.S. citizens or authorized to work in the United States.
The Las Cruces Police Department is currently staffed with 183 commissioned officers and is budgeted for 198 positions, leaving 15 vacancies to fill.
