Las Cruces Hosts Live Taping of ‘Pass the Sopapillas’ Podcast on Family Futures

On May 31st, the Las Cruces community came together at KWRG Studios, NMSU Milton Hall, for a live recording of ‘Pass the Sopapillas,’ a podcast dedicated to discussing the future of children and families in New Mexico. Hosted by New Mexico State Poet Laureate Manuel González and presented by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the event emphasized the importance of community connection and shared values.

Community Engagement and Family Focus

The podcast’s theme, ‘Jobs and Family Economic Security,’ attracted local residents eager to participate in a conversation about improving life for families. González highlighted the cultural significance of sharing sopapillas, a traditional New Mexican dish, as a metaphor for togetherness and collaboration. ‘In New Mexico, passing sopapillas around the table is about togetherness, sharing, and connection,’ González explained. ‘That is what this podcast is about—bringing people together to share ideas and imagine the future we want for our children and families.’

Micah McCoy, communications officer for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, praised New Mexico’s recent achievements, such as free in-state college tuition, free school meals, and universal childcare. ‘New Mexicans have proven they can take on big challenges and make life better for children and families,’ McCoy stated. ‘So what else is possible? ‘Pass the Sopapillas’ is about inviting New Mexicans to keep asking that question—and to see themselves as part of the answer.’

The event featured not only discussions but also music and, fittingly, sopapillas, creating a welcoming atmosphere for attendees. The podcast aims to continue fostering dialogue and community involvement in shaping a prosperous future for the state’s families.
