A new mural, titled ‘Cultivating Community,’ has been unveiled at Fire Station 2 in Las Cruces. The mural, created by artist Faridi Buhaya, was chosen by the community through a vote on the city’s website.
Community Involvement
The project was a collaboration between the Quality-of-Life Department and the Las Cruces Fire Department. Mayor Eric Enriquez expressed his appreciation for the mural, stating that it holds a special place in his heart due to his history with Fire Station 2.
Carol Crey, director of the Quality-of-Life Department, thanked Chief Mike Daniels for his help in spearheading the project and praised Buhaya for her beautiful design, which reflects the culture, history, and traditions of the borderland area.
Representing Local History
City Council District 3 Representative Michael Harris, who is the liaison to the City Art Board, noted that public art adds visual identities to neighborhoods. He highlighted the rich history of the Chiva Town area, where the fire station is located, and thanked Buhaya for representing this history in her artwork.
Buhaya stated that the mural is about celebrating culture and the important work that firefighters do in communities like Chiva Town. She also expressed her desire to inspire young girls with the inclusion of a woman firefighter in the mural.
