There are restaurants you visit because you are hungry, and then there are restaurants you visit because you need to feel something. El Five, perched on the fifth floor of a converted LoHi warehouse on West 32nd Avenue, belongs firmly in that second category. The moment the elevator doors open and you step into that sweeping, light-drenched space, with its arched Moorish windows, hanging lanterns, and a panoramic view of the Denver skyline dissolving into the Front Range, something shifts. You stop checking your phone. You start paying attention.
El Five describes itself as a Mediterranean tapas bar, but that description undersells it. Chef-owner Frank Bonanno and his team have built something more ambitious here — a love letter to the cuisines that ring the Mediterranean Sea, from the mezze tables of Lebanon to the tapas bars of Barcelona to the spice markets of Morocco. The menu reads like an itinerary for a dream trip you have not taken yet, and every plate that lands on your table makes you wish you had booked the flight.
Start with the hummus, which arrives silky and warm beneath a lake of olive oil and a scattering of smoked paprika — the kind of hummus that makes every other hummus feel like an apology. Then move to the crispy lamb and feta hand pies, tucked inside flaky, golden pastry and served with a bright harissa dipping sauce that has just enough heat to keep your attention. The Spanish-style pan con tomate — thick-cut bread rubbed with ripe tomato, doused in good olive oil, finished with a dusting of sea salt — is embarrassingly simple and absolutely irreplaceable.
Order the paella. I know it feels like a lot for a tapas spread, but order it anyway. The house paella arrives in a proper wide pan, its rice carrying that elusive, slightly smoky socarrat crust along the bottom, studded with saffron-stained clams, shrimp, and house-made chorizo. It is a dish that demands a table of friends, a carafe of Albariño, and a complete absence of anywhere else to be.
Speaking of drinks — El Five’s bar program is not an afterthought. The cocktail list leans into the Mediterranean theme with spritzes built on Aperol and Lillet, gin-forward drinks brightened with preserved lemon, and a genuinely spectacular house sangria that arrives in a ceramic pitcher and disappears faster than seems reasonable. The wine list skews Spanish and Greek with a handful of North African and Lebanese options that are worth exploring, especially if your server offers to guide you through them.
The room itself is part of the experience. The design team layered in hand-painted tiles, vintage mirrors, warm brass fixtures, and enough potted greenery to make the whole space feel like a rooftop garden that somehow ended up indoors. On a clear evening, as the sun drops behind the Rockies and the city lights begin to flicker on below you, the view through those arched windows is genuinely one of the finest in Denver. Tables near the windows book fast — reserve early and ask specifically for one.
LoHi, the Lower Highland neighborhood that El Five calls home, is one of Denver’s most walkable and energetic districts, full of independent shops, coffee bars, and some of the city’s most thoughtful dining. But El Five sits above it all — literally — and the altitude lends the whole experience a sense of occasion that is hard to manufacture and even harder to forget. Whether you are celebrating something specific or just celebrating a Tuesday, El Five delivers the kind of evening that gets brought up at dinner parties for months afterward.
Reservations are strongly recommended, especially on weekends. The restaurant opens for dinner Tuesday through Sunday, and happy hour runs early in the evening with a shortened menu that is an excellent way to sample the kitchen without committing to a full spread. Though, fair warning: once you sit down and see what is coming out of that kitchen, a full spread will feel entirely justified.
