A devastating eight-vehicle crash in Lantana, Florida, has resulted in the death of one person and serious injuries to two others. The crash occurred at the intersection of Dixie Highway and Ocean Avenue, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigation Ongoing
Investigators believe the crash began with a separate collision just moments earlier. Deputies say the driver of a Jeep Wrangler, identified as Charles Velbis, took off from that initial crash before speeding toward the intersection where the deadly crash unfolded.
Newly obtained surveillance video captured Tuesday morning appears to show the Jeep traveling down Dixie Highway, passing other vehicles, and striking one along the roadway just seconds before the deadly crash.
Salvatore Perna, who owns Discount Car Rental on Dixie Highway, witnessed the Jeep moments before the crash. Perna described the Jeep as traveling at over 100 miles per hour and expressed his concern about the growing problem of reckless driving in the area.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has video from the area to come forward and assist in the investigation.
