Lancaster County records first West Nile virus death of the season

The Lincoln‑Lancaster County Health Department announced Tuesday that Nebraska has suffered its first West Nile virus death of the 2026 season. The victim, an adult in their 60s, was identified only by age to protect family privacy.

Local impact and case count

Since the start of summer, seven West Nile virus cases have been confirmed in Lancaster County. Four of those patients required hospitalization, underscoring the seriousness of the disease when it spreads.

Public‑health guidance

County officials reminded residents that mosquitoes remain active through the first frost and urged the community to take proven steps to avoid bites. The health department highlighted the following protective measures:

  • Apply an EPA‑registered insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para‑menthane‑diol, or 2‑undecanone when outdoors.
  • Limit outdoor activities at dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Wear long‑sleeved shirts, long pants, shoes, and socks when spending time outside.

For more detailed information on EPA‑approved repellents, residents can visit epa.gov/insect-repellents.

Why vigilance matters

West Nile virus is transmitted through mosquito bites and can cause severe neurological illness, especially in older adults and those with weakened immune systems. Early detection and prompt medical care improve outcomes, but prevention remains the most effective strategy.

County health officials continue to monitor mosquito populations and will issue updates if additional cases emerge. They encourage anyone experiencing fever, headache, muscle aches, or neurological symptoms after a mosquito bite to seek medical attention promptly.

Community response

Local community groups have already begun distributing informational flyers and organizing neighborhood clean‑up events to eliminate standing water where mosquitoes breed. Residents are asked to empty bird baths, clean gutters, and remove any containers that can collect rainwater.

By working together, Lancaster County aims to protect its citizens from further West Nile virus infections as the season draws to a close.
