Lancaster County Attorney candidate Randall Ritnour called on County Attorney Pat Condon to appoint an independent prosecutor to oversee the investigation of fraudulent signatures submitted by Good Government Lincoln.
Concerns Over Political Connections
Ritnour stated that his request is not an accusation of wrongdoing, but rather a call for independence in the investigation. He cited concerns over political connections between individuals involved in the investigation, including campaign contributions and endorsements.
According to campaign-finance records, Lancaster County Sheriff candidate Ben Houchin’s campaign received money from Nebraska Highwater PAC, which had Daniel Bass as its treasurer before he became treasurer of Good Government Lincoln. Ritnour emphasized that these connections do not necessarily prove misconduct, but rather create an avoidable question about who should make prosecutorial decisions.
Condon released a statement in response, stating that he is aware of his responsibility to the rule of law and sees no conflicts of interest. He also noted that appointing an outside counsel would be costly to taxpayers.
