Lamont and Fazio outline competing economic plans at CT Business Forum

More than 400 members of the Connecticut business community gathered Thursday morning for a forum hosted by the Connecticut Business and Industry Association (CBIA). Both major candidates for governor – incumbent Democrat Ned Lamont and Republican challenger Sen. Ryan Fazio of Greenwich – addressed the audience separately, laying out their visions for the state’s economy.

Fazio pushes tax cuts and deregulation

Sen. Fazio, the 36‑year‑old Republican, argued that Connecticut must reverse its current trajectory. He called for broad tax reforms, including reductions in income taxes and lower electricity bills, and pledged to cut red tape around occupational licensing. “Connecticut really does have all the fundamental attributes to succeed, like no other state economy in the entire country, and yet people are pessimistic,” Fazio said. He said the state could save “$2 billion per year or more” by limiting spending and redirecting those savings to tax relief for middle‑class families.

Fazio also promoted competition in the health‑insurance market through association health plans, allowing small businesses to band together to purchase coverage. He framed apprenticeships and vocational training as essential tools to close the skills gap and spur job creation.

Lamont emphasizes balanced budgets and innovation

Governor Lamont highlighted the eight consecutive balanced budgets achieved during his tenure and pointed to the state’s shift from one of the slowest‑growing economies to the 12th‑fastest in the nation. He said his administration would continue to expand housing supply, strengthen workforce pathways, and support Connecticut’s life‑science and innovation sectors.

Lamont also reaffirmed his commitment to health‑care affordability, noting that federal cuts to benefits have heightened concerns for residents. He promised to build on existing programs that increase access to care while preserving fiscal responsibility.

Poll shows incumbent ahead, but voters still demand change

A recent CBIA consumer survey found that half of Connecticut residents feel worse off than a year ago, underscoring persistent concerns about cost of living and job security. Meanwhile, a separate poll released Thursday shows Governor Lamont holding a double‑digit lead over Fazio as Election Day approaches.

Both candidates acknowledged the survey findings. Fazio framed the data as evidence that a new direction is needed, while Lamont argued that his record of balanced budgets and economic growth demonstrates steady progress.

Business community looks for practical solutions

Attendees at the forum expressed a desire for clear, actionable policies that address the state’s uneven economic picture. Many business leaders cited regulatory burdens and high operating costs as obstacles to growth. The dialogue highlighted a shared concern: Connecticut must become more affordable for families while fostering an environment where businesses can thrive.

As the campaign moves toward the first debate, the contrasting approaches of Lamont and Fazio will likely shape voter decisions. The next few weeks will test whether Connecticut’s electorate favors continuity and incremental improvement or a more aggressive shift in tax and regulatory policy.
