A traffic stop in Lakeside on Wednesday night, July 15, took a dangerous turn when officers discovered explosive devices in the vehicle. The driver, who has not been identified, was taken into custody and is facing charges of Reckless Driving and Prohibited Weapons.
Investigation and Charges
According to the Lakeside Police Department, officers initially stopped the vehicle for a traffic violation. However, the situation escalated when the vehicle began driving on the wrong side of the road without headlights. The driver then swerved across the road, veered onto the shoulder, and struck a TxDOT “Do Not Enter” sign.
Upon further investigation, officers found several suspicious, heavily modified pyrotechnic devices wrapped in black electrical tape, with exposed fuses and pull rings. The Fort Worth Police Department Bomb Squad was called to assist due to the volatile nature of the materials found.
Technicians determined that one of the devices was designed as a projectile weapon containing an explosive charge. The driver admitted to constructing the devices using components from an airsoft gun and stated that the device contained BB projectiles and fireworks.
