Lake Helen Remains Under Boil‑Water Order as Officials Test for E. coli

Lake Helen, Fla. – The city’s water system is still under a boil‑water notice for a third consecutive day after laboratory testing detected E. coli in raw water drawn from one of the municipal wells. The notice, which began on Monday, requires all residents to boil tap water before drinking, cooking, or brushing teeth.

Residents cope with daily challenges

Local mother of four Abby Alam described the situation as “survival mode.” “We’re using paper plates because we don’t want to use our dishes and then have to wash them,” Alam said. “We’re just trying to survive until the boil‑water notice is lifted.” Like many families in the small city, Alam has stocked up on bottled water and is relying on disposable utensils to avoid cross‑contamination.

City officials explain the source of the contamination

City Administrator John Brant clarified that the positive E. coli result came from the raw water before it entered the city’s chlorination process. “We have not received any positive E. coli test results from the distribution system,” Brant said, emphasizing that the treated water reaching homes remains safe.

State health regulations require two consecutive negative E. coli tests from the distribution system before a boil‑water order can be lifted. Brant indicated that the city expects to receive those results by Thursday afternoon or Friday morning, pending laboratory turnaround.

Infrastructure needs and funding efforts

While the current incident is not attributed to the city’s aging water infrastructure, Brant acknowledged that the system does need major upgrades. “Our water system is older than many of our neighbors, and we are actively pursuing improvements,” he said.

The city has already secured federal grant funding and is applying for State Revolving Fund loans to finance the necessary upgrades. Those funds are intended to replace aging pipes, modernize treatment equipment, and improve overall system resilience.

Immediate relief measures

In the short term, city staff are coordinating the purchase and distribution of additional bottled water for residents who lack sufficient supplies. Local churches and community groups have also stepped forward to assist families in need.

Brant urged residents to continue following the boil‑water guidelines and to stay informed through the city’s official website and social‑media channels. “We understand the inconvenience this causes, especially for families with young children,” he said. “Our priority is to protect public health while we work quickly to resolve the issue.”

What residents should do

  • Boil tap water for at least one minute before use.
  • Use bottled water for drinking, cooking, and brushing teeth if boiling is not feasible.
  • Avoid using dishes that cannot be thoroughly cleaned.
  • Check the city’s website for updates on test results and the expected lift date.

The city plans to issue a public notice as soon as the required negative test results are confirmed, allowing residents to return to normal water usage.
