Labor Day 2026: Schools, transit and city services closed or on Sunday schedules in DC area

Summer is winding down, and the Labor Day holiday brings a wave of service changes for residents of Washington, DC and the surrounding counties of Maryland and Virginia. All public schools in the District will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7, giving families a long weekend.

Transit adjustments

Metro will operate on its Sunday schedule Monday, with Metrorail running from 6 a.m. until midnight and Metrobus on a Sunday timetable. MetroAccess subscription trips are canceled, though individual reservations remain possible, and parking at Metro‑owned lots and garages will be free.

On the Green Line, the Branch Avenue, Suitland and Naylor Road stations will reopen after a month‑long closure, with free shuttle buses continuing to serve riders.

There will be no MARC train service Monday, and VRE train service will also be suspended. MTA Commuter Bus #201 will run only trips marked for weekend/holiday schedules. Amtrak will run, but travelers should check the schedule for updates.

County transit agencies are largely on Sunday schedules: Prince George’s County’s TheBus, Call‑A‑Bus and PGC Link services (including dialysis transport) will not operate Monday; Howard County’s Regional Transportation Agency will follow a Sunday timetable; Anne Arundel County will run bus lines 201‑203 and the BWI Express, while several other routes are suspended.

Montgomery County’s RideOn Bus, Fairfax County’s Fairfax Connector, Arlington’s ART routes 41, 42, 45, 51, 55 and 87, and Alexandria’s DASH service will all run on weekend schedules, with specific lines omitted.

Library, DMV and public‑works closures

All DC Public Library branches will be closed Monday. The District Department of Motor Vehicles will be closed both Saturday and Monday; residents are urged to use online services or the free mobile app.

The District Department of Transportation will suspend non‑emergency construction work, and parking enforcement will pause for the holiday, resuming Tuesday.

The Department of Public Works will not collect household trash, recycling or food waste on Monday; collection will slide to Thursday. The Fort Totten Transfer Station will be closed to the public, with bulk trash and recycling services returning Tuesday.

Parks, pools and community services

Outdoor pools at Banneker, Volta, Francis, Hearst, Upshur, Langdon, Rosedale, Ridge Road and Oxon Run will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Indoor aquatic centers and recreation facilities will remain closed.

Spray parks stay open 10 a.m.–6 p.m., and outdoor parks, playgrounds, athletic courts and fields are available. All recreation offices and indoor centers close Monday.

Low‑barrier shelters for individuals experiencing homelessness operate 24 hours. Zoe’s Doors Youth Drop‑In Center will be open, while the Adams Place Day Center and 801 East Day Center close.

The Downtown Day Services Center will provide walk‑in services 9 a.m.–5 p.m. without appointments.

County‑wide service changes

Prince George’s County libraries close Sunday and Monday; trash, recycling and bulky‑item collection slide to Wednesday‑Saturday, with bulky‑item pickups by appointment only.

Montgomery County libraries close Sunday and Monday; trash collection slides by one day, and county parking is free. Outdoor pools stay open, but indoor recreation centers close.

In Virginia, State Motor Vehicle Administration offices and emissions inspection stations are closed. Alcohol beverage stores open 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Courts, animal shelters, historic sites and many parks are closed Monday, while select community centers such as the Roger Carter Community Center operate with reduced hours.

Arlington’s parking meters are not enforced on the holiday, though permit parking remains in effect. Recycling, trash and organics follow a normal schedule.

Residents are encouraged to check individual agency websites for any last‑minute updates and to plan accordingly for the long weekend.
