Los Angeles – The LA28 organizing committee revealed the preliminary triathlon courses for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games on Wednesday, placing the events at iconic Venice Beach. Spectators will enjoy a shared finish line that looks out over the Pacific Ocean.
Course layout and spectator experience
The routes, still subject to operational testing, will use a central transition area near the beach, allowing fans to watch athletes move seamlessly between swimming, cycling and running segments. Organizers highlighted the generally flat cycling and running courses, designed to encourage fast racing and exciting finishes.
Schedule of events
The women’s individual triathlon is set for July 15, marking the first medal ceremony of the Games. The men’s race follows on July 16, and the mixed relay is scheduled for July 20.
In the individual events, competitors will start with a 1.5 km ocean swim, entering the water directly from the beach rather than a pontoon. The swim consists of a 1,000 m lap, a brief beach run, and a second 500 m lap. Athletes will then complete eight 5 km cycling laps that weave along the Venice Beach path and city streets, followed by a four‑lap, 10 km run that crosses bridges in the Venice Canals area.
Mixed relay and Paralympic races
The mixed relay will feature teams of four athletes in a women‑men‑women‑men order. Each athlete will swim 350 m, cycle 6.6 km and run 1.6 km before handing off to a teammate.
Paralympic individual races are slated for August 18‑19, 2028. These will include a 750 m swim launched from a barge beyond the breakwater, a 20 km bike course and a 5 km run, with athletes competing across six sport classes.
Testing and future plans
LA28 announced that the courses will be tested during a World Triathlon T50 Triathlon World Tour event in Venice from July 16‑18, 2027, giving organizers a chance to fine‑tune the layout ahead of the Games.
